Day 9: Highway 1 & Big Sur

Lots pictures for this post. I finally downloaded the pics from the awsome waterproof camera that Adam gave us (thank you!)

Yesterday we drove from SLO up Highway 1, through Big Sur. Just about everyone else also did this drive yesterday, it being the holiday weekend. But we still had a few picturesque stops without much traffic.

We drove in and out of the fog along the steep coast. The cliffs were strikingly beautiful dropping in to the sea.

The areas around the state parks were so crowded that there was no way we could get a campsite without a reservation. We ended up testing our luck and driving up Palo Colorado Canyon to Botcher's Camp, a walk-in campgroup at the top of a cliff right on the border of Forest Service land. If we had been 15 minutes later, the campground would have been full and we would not have been able to get a site. Luckily, there were a few sites left, so we hiked our tent and gear back. There was poison oak EVERYWHERE! Juniper had to stay on the leash most of the time to keep her out of it.
