Day 4: Cannell Trail Bike Packing

Some memories of the first day of our bike trip:

Bright pink wildflowers in sunny spots of the hill slopes.

Fruity apple smell of manzanita fruit.

Shoelace sized snake on the road.

Juniper rode in the trailer and did great except when she tried to go after a squirrel and face planted.

Going to bed sweaty and dusty and happy, but we don't have enough water to wash our faces.

Amazing wildflowers along the streams and meadows. Red, pink, yellow, orange, purple.

Drinking out of the cold spring and cooling off during the hottest part of the day.

Bear tracks on the trail.

Tired and exhausted and frustrated during the hike a bike uphill pushes. We biked 20+ miles ridden today! juniper rode in the trailer for about 1/3 of the way.

Huge big old ponderosas. Firs with their  cones standing up. Spruces shading the forest.

Lots of Mosquitos at camp. Freeze dried dinner was salty, but we needed the salt! Only problem during the whole day is we are low on water. We want to wake up at 5:30am again to head down before it gets hot. 9 miles to go!

Day 3: Kernville

Swimming in the Upper Kern first thing before heading to town. As we drove down the canyon we could smell all of the campers' breakfasts cooking. The sweet smell of pancakes and bacon while passing one campground. Then sausage at the next. One campground smelled really bad of burnt bacon. Not very appetizing.

We bought a sweet walla walla onion, some green onions for grilling, summer tangerines, and a mix of cooking greens during our morning visit to the farmers market. Then it started to get really hot again.

Everyone is talking about this record heat wave. Ugh. We decide to try to get up in the mountains as soon as possible. But before we can drive up to 9200 feet, we have some things to do down in Kernville at 4000 feet.

We stopped by the rafting shop to get a map for mountain biking the Cannell Trail.

Lunch at the Kern River Brewing Company. Burgers and beer sampler out on the shaded patio felt like 105 degrees but was supposedly only 98. Weather report says it will reach 108 today and tomorrow. Yikes!

Lets get out of the heat! Back up the river to jump in and cool off.  Then drive up to Sherman Pass where the pines and spruce will shade us from the sun.

Camped up in the spruce trees and enjoyed a firey orange sunset. We got all of our bike gear together to get ready for our big bike trip the next day. Since it is our first bike trip like this we had to make sure we could pack everything we need on the two bikes and the trailer, while saving room for Juniper to ride in the trailer. We practiced pulling her around the campsite and taught we how to jump in to her spot. Went to sleep early so we could wake up at 5:30 am for the shuttle ride.

Day 2: Las Vegas to Ridgecrest to Kernville

It was hot. Air conditioning in the truck on and off to keep from overheating the engine.

Thanks to Bill and Ann for letting us nap at their comfy air conditioned house in Ridgecrest. Finally had my acrylic nails removed at Star Nails!

Stopped at Indian Wells Brewery outside of Ridgecrest to get a sampler. We both love the Mohave Red.

Headed to Kernville and tried to escape the heat by going up Sherman Pass Road. Allison found a secluded camp site with giant pine cones.

Thanks to Great Grandma Wanda for the leftover pinto beans. We enjoyed them for dinner. Yum!

Day 1: Morning at Mountain Springs

Here are some notes from out first day of the summer road trip:

We packed too much stuff. But we will figure out our system after a few more days if camping.

We almost melted in Las Vegas. Record heat!

We stumbled upon a secret camping spot outside of Vegas that got us up to almost 6000' and up out of the heat.

Woke up to a cool morning breeze and gorgeous limestone cliffs. Did a little geology research ( the limestone cliffs are older than the Aztec sandstone or Red Rocks even though they are in top)

Coffee and breakfast at Holly's Cuppa in Vegas.

Long and hot drive to Ridgecrest to hang out with Aunt Ann and Uncle Bill inside until it cools off a bit.

Headed to Kernville to get up in the mountains!
