Day 20: Rogue River & Crater Lake

We have had fantastic campsites the last 2 nights. Today, we woke up along the banks of the Rogue River. Our camp had its own private sandy beach, where Juniper dug herself a huge hole to lay in. We tried to fish from our campsite, but had no luck. High water and fast flows. We never saw fish there.

First adventure: the Natural Bridge on the Rogue, where the entire river goes underground in a lava tube and emerges 200 ft downstream. It was spectacular to see the amount if water gushing in to the hole in the ground.

Second adventure: a quick hike along the Rogue Gorge where the river flows through a narrow slot canyon that was once a lava tube.

Third adventure: Fishing along the river where Adrian found the secret trail. Cliffs that look like sandstone but are made of volcanic ash flows. Geology friends, what is this called? Tuff? We saw big fish, but they didn't bite. Ate wild strawberries and saw brilliant lilies.

Fourth adventure:  Crater Lake. Incredible views of the almost 2000 ft deep lake with hardly any access. There is only one trail down to the lake, and we skipped it. But next time I would want to go down to the water and ride the tour boat to m Wizard Island and hike up the reemergent dome.

Fifth adventure: Mexican food is La Pine. Yum!

Sixth and final adventure of the day: finding a campsite better than the last 2 nights. The lava flow just south of Newberry National Monument. Sleep log next to a black lava flow a couple square miles in size and watching the sun go down.

What a wonderful day. We are truly thankful for this honeymoon we are on.
